SAYRE ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM

“SERVING STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE”

 

The Alternative Education Program will serve 10-15 students from grades 9th-12th. The students will be administered the curriculum from Edgenuity and additional resource materials which meet the curricular standards adopted by the Oklahoma State Board of Education. The curriculum will be taught by a certified staff member. 


 

OUR GOALS

 

The major goal of the Sayre Alternative Education Program is to provide opportunities for the students not succeeding in the traditional classroom setting to obtain academic credit, career exploration activities, vocational work experience, and extended teacher/peer support in an alternative setting where the ultimate goal is that of obtaining a diploma. This is done by utilizing the 16 components for alternative education program as determined by the Oklahoma State Department of Education:


 

  1. Student-teacher ratios conducive to effective learning for at-risk students

  2. Appropriate structure, curriculum, interaction, and reinforcement strategies for effective instruction

  3. An intake and screening process to determine eligibility of students

  4. Appropriately certified teaching faculty

  5. Teaching faculty with experiences or personal traits that qualify them for successful work with at-risk students

  6. Collaboration with state and local agencies

  7. Courses that meet the curricular standards adopted by the Oklahoma State Board of Education

  8. Individualized instruction

  9. Clear and measurable goals and objectives

  10. Counseling and social service components

  11. Graduation plan for each student

  12. Life skills instruction

  13. Opportunities for arts education

  14. A proposed annual budget

  15. Service to students in Grades 9-12 who are most at risk of not completing high school for reasons other than disability

  16. Opportunities for student participation in vocational programs and extra-curricular activities , such as athletics, band, and clubs

OUR OBJECTIVES

 

Alternative education programs are designed to meet the unique personal and educational needs of students who may have been unsuccessful in traditional educational settings.

 

The objectives of Sayre Alternative Education Program include, but are not limited to, helping students:

 

*acquire a high school diploma

*enter institutes of higher education

*enter the armed forces

*acquire entry-level job skills through vocational programs

*develop feelings of self-worth, self-confidence, and personal satisfaction 

*develop a sense of responsibility

*develop a tolerance and understanding of a variety of viewpoints 

*experience a program tailored to individual needs, with classroom instruction   

  supplemented by independent study, work study, and career exploration

*understand and practice sound money management and become intelligent consumers
